National Aquarium

 

The national aquarium in Washington, DC is billed as being the countries oldest aquarium and is located only one block from the Washington monument. Visitors can visit the national aquarium as well as the Smithsonian Museum one block away. The national aquarium features over 80 exhibits and over 200 species of salt and freshwater aquatic life. Since 1931 the national aquarium has taught many people about the worlds oceans and the need to protect the worlds most endangered species. This is one of the aquariums that relies on private and public support as well as admission revenue for its operations budget.

There are always events going on at the national aquarium and visitors should plan their visit ahead of time to ensure that they gain the most from every visit. There are always special activities such as shark day or reptile day are examples of these special events that are planned. The national aquarium is also available for evening rentals by private individuals as well as companies looking for a different venue for a gathering designed to impress and entertain! There is also a birthday party room available most days as well as on weekends.

The national aquarium opens daily at 9 am and closes at 5 pm. General admission to the national aquarium is $5.00, seniors and military personnel is $4.00 and children from 2 to age 10 are $2.00. There are special rates for school groups and educational groups and programs can be planned with appropriate arrangements made ahead of time. Groups are expected to make a single payment to qualify for discounts. Visitors should note that the facility does not accept credit cards. The national aquarium is easily accessible from the federal triangle metro station, which serves both the orange and blue subway lines.
