Aquarium Filters

Aquariums filters are an important element of the aquarium which will ensure that many of the small particles that are in the water will be filtered out and keep your water from becoming cloudy. Clean clear water also means that your fish will be healthier, the sides of your aquarium will be clean and it will be easy to see not only your fish, but also your plants and decorations inside your aquarium.

Many people start out without an aquarium filter or circulation system. They have to go through the routine of changing the water every few days to ensure that the water is clean and also that there is an enough oxygen in the water for your fish and plants to exist. Can you imagine if you were forced to live like that with your air supply gradually declining until you received a new supply! Most aquarium owners quickly migrate to a pump and aquariums filters system to supply a continuous supply of oxygenated water and also filter out the particles that are often seen suspended in the water.

There are generally four types of filters with applications in different situations depending on the size and type of aquarium that you have. Large aquariums will require several filtration systems and most will still require a regular cleaning. The four types of filtration systems include mechanical, chemical, biological and physical. There is actually a fifth although many people do not use this type since it requires much more effort. The fifth type involves a large aquarium that uses aquatic plants to filter out the carbon dioxide and other nutrients that they need. Combined with sufficient circulation of the water and addition of oxygen, your fish will love hiding in among the roots of your aquatic plants.

Sand or gravel at the bottom of your aquarium act as filters by trapping particles at the bottom on a polyester pad which will need to be cleaned from time to time. Another type is activated carbon, which will extract the molecules of dissolved organic wastes and convert them to less toxic forms. Consumers can of course obtain more sophisticated filters, which include protein skimmers, ozonizers and ultraviolet sterilization units. All of this equipment can become expensive, however if you also have expensive fish you will want to ensure that their home is properly managed and they do not succumb due to bad water.

Most aquarium supply stores will be happy to sell you aquariums filters and other gear for your new aquarium. Customers may end up spending more money than they planned so there are a number of questions you will want to answer before your proceed. For example, how many fish you have will determine how large an aquarium you need. Will the aquarium be easy to change the water, clean it or is it so large that you must have a good aquariums filters system? How much can your budget afford?

Many new aquarium owners will begin with smaller tanks and gradually over time add larger tanks and upgrade their filter systems as their budget and interest dictates.
