Home Aquariums

Many people enjoy having home aquariums in their homes for both their pleasure in having a pet as well as a hobby that involves a little artistic challenge. There is the practical side of the home aquarium, such as how many fish, the size of your home aquarium, the pump and filter and of course the location and table that your home aquarium will sit on. There is also the artistic side of a home aquarium which involves how you will decorate the inside of your home aquarium with colourful rocks, branches and aquatic plants. Many people will spend hours and hours fussing over their home aquariums to get then just right for their taste and of course their budget.

We have included other articles on this web site that deal with some of the practical aspects of home aquariums. In this article we focus more on the artistic side of things and try to demonstrate that you really are only limited by two things. They are your imagination and your budget. Some consumers will purchase everything brand new for their aquarium and it could cost quite a bit of money to decorate their aquarium just the way they would like. Others will pick up small trinkets at garage sales and items that they may have around the home to use in their home aquarium.

For example a neighbour of mine spent part of his budget on the tank, the fish and a good pump with a filter system and of course natural lighting. The rest was all from around his home and this really made his home aquarium unique and decorative at the same time. Some rocks came from the garden, a tree branch also was taken from a tree with a dead limb and he added water hyacinths to the home aquarium to add colour and also to help control the algae in the water. In addition he added a few small trinkets that added some colour to the home aquarium and he was in business for relatively little money.

Now my neighbour is also the type that will decorate things over time and I highly recommend this approach. Besides it adds to the fund and enjoyment of home aquarium. He will enjoy his fish and watch them swimming around his home aquarium and from time to time he will add an item, perhaps remove some items from the home aquarium and generally make a few adjustments every week until he has his home aquarium just the way he wants it to be.

Decorations are very individual and every ones likes and dislikes are somewhat different. You can express your individual artistic talents as you fill your home aquarium with plants, rocks, trinkets and of course your tropical fish. If you have a large enough tank you can add several fish so they can interact with each other. My neighbour has a 20-gallon tank, which weighs approximately 168 pounds and will support four to six fish. With the natural lighting, plants and rocks, he has a very nice home aquarium on display.
